LAX: Light Motion Dreams updates with " _am I right side up or upside down, or dreaming?"
(...or the comic where some person crashes their car.)

This comic was so easy to draw, that it wasn't even funny.
Seriously, I did it about 40 minutes before the actual date time. Maybe it's just me, but I can't draw snow on the ground to save my life. Shit, last time I saw snow was about three-four years ago up in the mountains by Eagle Rock. Anyways, who's car is this? I'm pretty sure you all (all one of you.) know. Bwuh. I've been meaning to finally use a reference photo for drawing cars. Unlike buildings, cars end up very generic if not drawn correctly.

Somewhere in SF is looking up, I've already got a backlog of comics done. With 3 pages ahead of schedule, and the four one almost finished by the lovely bigfish. I dunno why, but I love drawing this comic more than LAX. Maybe it's the fact that I have someone else to work with, and that makes it easier? Whatever it is. It sure is fun.
These blog posts have been sucking lately. Somewhere along the line I lost it and became this. Bwuh, even my old blogger post were better than the crap I've been throwing out. Hey, maybe I should go back to blogger. It was much funner over there? I dunno. Hell, I can't sleep. This is the only reason I'm writing this blog as Rocko's Modern Life is on. (the newer seasons, with the re-done theme song that sounds funky and electronic.)

Oh, that brings a smile to my face. It really, really does. :)

I think I'm going to redesign my LAX page a little. Change a few pictures, move the main banner around, small little touch ups that drive me insane like how water would drive a person insane if it were dripping in a silent room with no way to turn it off. Eh, maybe I should start some sort of HTML business online. That would be very cool.

Oh, that brings a smile to my face. It really, really does. :)

LAX: Light Motion Dreams updates with "Have a Pineapple~!"
(...or the comic where it snows in Los Angeles.)
Spot the reference to Super Mario Sunshine and get nothing.
Hmmm...I haven't updated my blog in a while lately. Could it be lack of things to talk about? Lack of interest on both sides? Eh, you tell me. It's not like my secret ramblings are read by many people aside some webcomic friends and that Google spambot that visits my site (I made that up, no such thing exists.) It's been a long time since I updated this obviously inferior better version of my old blogger site, so much that I forgot the password. Does it matter? Not really, because I'm feeling better than ever felt before today, yesterday and maybe tomorrow.
As my cracking speakers turn the song from one to another, the sky is blue and I'm writing unnecessary paragraphs just to fill space, I like to wonder to myself when writing my blog about nothing. (this is the point where I actually come up with something...which I haven't.)
On Friday, I asked lefarce for help. I asked him to put aside our friendship and to give me the perfectly honest review of LAX. Saturday came, and I got a review where LAX did better than I would ever think. That made me realize two things, I have a shit-load of useless fillers and two, I realized why it is I feel bad about my webcomic. Simple answer, I'm an idiot. Long answer, I'm an idiot. Let me clarify, I expect too much from a webcomic that is pretty hard to get into. I want to become popular, and I know that I never will happen, which drives me insane whenever a new comic comes along and reaches the metaphorical top faster than me. Somewhere along the line I forgot why I do LAX, to be different it is. Excuse me, I sorry if I bore you, it must be tiring to have to waddle through my pretentious bullshit every time, right? (I'll clean your feet, come here.)
Here, without further adieu, I present the LAX review, as written by lefarce:
1= BAD
2= Below average
3= Average
4= Entertaining
5= If god himself made a comic... blah blah blah...
Course this is all probably obvious to you. I'm just saying that in REAL reviews, I hold a 5 in only the highest regards, and I take 3's as being very flattering. Cause I'm a dick.
LAX: Light Motion Dreams is one of the most interesting web comics I've read, due to it's extreme commitment to character development. Much of the first chapter was spent with Chris prattling on about robots and Windows Vista, which really helps you understand what kind of guy he is. Laid back, slackerism, and hip on pop culture. His boss is one of his close friends, and even goes so far as to defend his position at LAX even though she knows it could cost her's. Their bond helps set the stage for character development later.
Story: The pacing, as I said, is almost perfect. There are some filler issues that really really disrupt the reading process that are strewn throughout most of the issues, but even then they're entertaining enough to read. The story is really gripping and makes great use of the concept of character development. In the matter of two chapters Chris goes from being a laid back pop culture squawk box to a melodramatic depressive recluse. And the bet part of this is that it didn't happen in ten pages like most comics would have. LAX doesn't push it's self to get to one point. It will get there when it gets there, and that's such a fresh change from the norm.
Artwork: The art work is wonky yet detailed. The anatomy of the characters is a bit sloppy. Super thin arms and diamond shaped heads... I suppose one could just call this the style of LAX, but in early issues it can be bothersome. The only major downfall is the facial expressions. The mouths are too far down on the face, making you wonder if it's even moving when they talk. The eyes are also huge and bug like. Overall the characters are just stiff and show little emotion. The backgrounds melt into the characters at other times. It seems to be caused by a lack of true contrast. Maybe if they were done in a different ink, or in pencil while the characters are in ink, etc.
However, the backgrounds and planes are a beauty to behold. LAX is so detailed and full of life, and it really tells me that a lot of time was spent into research. This comic is taken very seriously, and tons of time and effort goes into the art from what I can tell. It pays off. But in the end, it feels like the buildings and planes have more life than the characters.
Presentation: Here's the tricky part. LAX is a sound filled comic. It relies on music. If the wrong choice in music is chosen, the issue fails. It's a real hit or miss. Overall the musical selection has been spot on, but technical problems abound. No everyone can play the issues, and the fact that there are several issues types (grey box, scroll over, choice, animated, scene selection, still music), at one point everyone will find that at least one issue just won't work. Plain and simple. I myself cannot play the three current issues, and I've missed many others during the past. However, there is no easy solution. The music NEEDS to be there. It adds so much to the comic and makes it even more enjoyable to read. Taking the music out of LAX would be like taking the airport it's self out. It's just not right and goes against everything the comic stands for.
Some issues work better than others though. I've found that issues that just loop audio play easier than ones that don't. The work of the bunch is the panel selection, where one must click "next" to progress to the next panel. Basically it does nothing for the comic. We already move to the next panel on our own when it's in a normal format. If and issue is going to be semi animated, it shouldn't be left to use to direct it. But a slower frame rate would be nice. The choice issues are still one of my favorites though, because it adds more readability to a single update.
Overall: This comic is fun, detailed, and gripping. The storyline, fluid artwork, and savvy soundtrack pulls me in and never wants to let me go. However, format issues, and lack of real emotion from the characters really hinder this from being as edgy as it could. It's nothing that I've ever seen before, and it truly a fantastic comic. I won't lie, I really hope it goes places as well.
GOOD:
+ Pacing is perfect. Characters develop on their own, and there is no rush to get anywhere.
+ LAX is insanely detailed and full of vibrant life.
+ Colored issues are amazingly dream like.
+ Awesome musical selection. SOUNDTRAX PLZ!
BAD:
- Random filler = :(
- Format errors are abound, making some issues literally impossible to read depending on your computer.
- Needs more contrast between characters and objects.
PRO/CON
-/+ Stiff characters. This is good and bad. It's the style, but it's also near lifeless.
Rating: 3.5

LAX: Light Motion Dreams updates with: "_what the head makes cloudy, the heart makes very clear."
(or the comic where a new character appears.)

I spent extra time on this comic, like alot of extra time. With like rulers and stuff. I don't know if it was worth it, seriously. I think I'm gonna spend a little time trying to develop this character for the rest of the chapter. What's her name? Who is she? What does she do? Find out. You see that movie poster she is next to? I'd bet that would be a horrible movie. Also, it's true of what she says. December 25th in 2009 lies on a Friday. (bwuh to spending the holidays either working or alone.)

LAX: Light Motion Dreams updates with: "_on a weekend, I wanna wish it all away."
(or the comic where chris destroys his room.)

Bwuh, a one panel comic featuring the destruction of Chris's room (living room? bedroom?) Of course, if you don't get it. This scene is a reference to that part in Pink Floyd's The Wall. You know, that scene where Pinky destroys his entire hotel room, gets the TV, throws it at the window, and as he hangs over the window, blood glushing from his hands, he yells out, "Next time, Fuckers!" Yeah, that's totally it. It does seem that Chris has some serious problems he should get checked out or something.
Hmmm, I also redid my entire site. There's something about creating a website before the sun rises that gets to me. Most importantly, I worked hard on my links page, which feature something I'm kinda proud of. ...of course, I still need a description for Dueling Analogs and possibly a better picture for Big Fish Comic. To see what it is, check it.

Anyone know that damned Peaches song, "Fuck the Pain Away"? Jebus, I hate that song.
Also, yay?

LAX: Light Motion Dreams updates with: "_and they called and I said that I want what I said"
(or the comic where emily and chris fight.)

Yeah, it could be a valentine's day strip, but then I'd have to continue this, ending up that after two months of updates, it'll still be Valentine's Day. Whatever, spending Christmas alone is a much sadder and more emo thing. So, what did Chris say to Emily that pissed her off? Who knows. (I know.) Bwuh, here's the lighter side. Ever wonder what would happen if fern made this strip? Yeah. Brilliance.
Bah, my mouth still hurts from the visit to the dental office. I need to clean out my sink, which is still filled with blood. There is also this horrible taste in my mouth, ugh. I feel like crap. These painkillers can put anyone to sleep. I took one in the morning, didn't wake up until 12:00. (I normally wake up at 6.) Dude, I can't wait until tomorrow, I'll probably feel better.

I dunno. I found that on my hard drive this morning.
Fantastic news, peeps. I talked about how the 76 ball from Union stations were being taken down once. I even made a comic based on it. I dunno, I've always enjoyed those 76 logos, I remember how they would dress them up for Halloween. The future seemed grim for these balls, that is, until now. (I just wish my dad coulda been here to see this.)
Check this out.
BigFish has that cool tracker map that displays where anyone who visits her site lives in, that's pretty cool. I could steal her idea and post one here. But nah, I steal enough stuff from her. Like the dress-up game and the links section. Rather, I shall post this here, just pretend it's cooler than a map of visitors.

By the way, I can't believe the internet still has this.

LAX: Light Motion Dreams updates with: "_does emily dream of electric paradise?"
(or the comic where emily dreams about eddie money again.)

Yeah, originally it was supposed to be a longer page with her waking up only to notice someone was at the door, then when she opens the door it's these shady men in black. (...like those stereotypical bodyguard suits in movies.) Like other artists, I'm lazy so I just decided on this. So, who's calling her? Who knows. (I do.) There's a small throwback to another comic, which is like a running joke now (...except running jokes are funny.) Oh yeah, by the way. This page has a vague similarities to Harbor Freeway (the comic I abandoned like a pregnant girlfriend, lol.) Coincidence? Probably. Also, if you are wondering, the title of this comic is a horrible reference to the book by Philip K. Dick. I changed the DrunkDuck site around after finishing work on the Somewhere in San Fransisco site. Go check it out. I'll display the Somewhere in San Fransisco site at sometime later.
Hmmm, I have a deep obsession with Morcheeba. It's a cool little downtempo electronic band. It's very soft Sunday morning pop rock. Kinda like Ivy except a bit more electronic. I downloaded the track Lighten Up at downloads.com (the song is on my radio.blog by the way) After hearing that song I was hooked, I then ended up with a few tracks from the album The Big Calm.
Somewhere in San Fransisco updates with: "Filler Sexy Sara"
(or hey, this is so close to hentai, it's not funny.)

After seeing this filler, it's no wonder why Brandon wanted butt-sex (lol.) BigFish drew this little update, she did everything. From the art to the blur/unblur flash. No wonder I call her the flash queen. I totally need to find that fucking tablet pen.
I've downloaded an emulator. Anyone remember that bathroom part in the Facuity level?
I remember I used to do this when I was much smaller.

I would set up a whole bunch of mines.

...and I mean a whole bunch.
(I didn't know this until now. If you put too many mines in this level, they will disappear.)

I would back off a little.

...then boom. (Much disappointing on the emulator.)

Anyone notice the similarity between Enigma's Mea Culpa and PM Dawn's "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss"? The difference is the same spirital, free form base of music created for the relaxation of the soul. Here's the funny part, open up Limewire, type in Set Adrift on Memory Bliss, you see that? Yup. Many people believe the this very song was created by Enigma.

I made a search on how many songs I have today, the results were very disappointing. Only 1245 files? Jebus, I remember I had 3000+ on my computer. When my computer crashed, it took a whole lot of files with it. Only until now I'm a realizing the full impact of what I lost. Three months ago, I would search for how many songs I have, the search itself could crash my computer. Today it's a shadow of it's former glorious self. (...now, to download about 10 GB of music.)
Speaking of music, the lovable BigFish does have quite the music taste, if you've seen her Big Fish Comic radio.blog and our Somewhere in San Fransisco radio.blog, this would become apparent. Who would be the winner in this case? We versus Phyllis? Well, I dunno. It's a massive difference.
Wait, some more music topics. I just found out that Gregory's show, Light Motion Dreams has expanded to another day. Aside from it's Monday outing at 12:00 to 1:00 am. it's been also given a new timeslot, Wednesday at 12:00 to 1:00 am. If you love the music seen in my radio thingy, you'll love this show. Hell, it's my second favorite radio show after Morning Becomes Eclectic and before Nocturna (...which are both on kcrw.)

LAX: Light Motion Dreams updates with: "...pokemonoke."
Heh, I actually had fun writing this comic. One of those spur of the moment deals.
Ughh... I've had a shitty Saturday. First of all, my computer kept on shutting off. Turns out I got a virus. Yup, I had to go to my files, look through all those old Vaio papers and registration from Best Buy. I found these old System Reboot disc. (I had only vol. 1 and vol. 3, I had to cancel the reboot to look for vol. 2, when I stopped the reboot. I was left without an operating system.) The good thing is that now my compy is pretty fast, there is no junk cluttering up the place, and it's all pretty damn well. What sucks is that I lost every single program, Flash, Adobe PhotoShop, Fireworks, SwishMax, all of them. Good thing I keep the original files on the D drive, other wise San Fransisco would be fucked. (as of now, only Dreamweaver is installed.)
The second thing is that I'm fucking sick. Third? It was raining today. Yay.

Also, remember Quantic Dream? The masterminds behind Indigo Prophecy are at it again with a game called Heavy Rain. The E3 demo, which showcases the power of what they are capable is quite amazing. The characters move life-like. (That whole awkwardness in movement between surface and character seen in games like Shenmue and The Getaway is gone.) with fluid motion and believability. Although the faces? as real as they seem, they are missing something.
...So, the mystery to my gender? Don't believe anything. (except
bigfishcomics )

I drew some art for LAX consisting of Emily and Chris, these were just sketches to test things. (I've been feeling down about my art for a while now.) First up is Emily wearing a sweater. The second is Chris being relaxed. (zomg wtf.)

The other was of a simple car. (generic brand.)

While bored, I also decided to sketch out some things. What do I draw when I can't think of anything? The answer is quite simple, I draw other people's comics. I decided to test my self, how much of an artist am I. I drew (as in tried to emulate their styles) my favorite comics:
my first victim was BigFishComics. (advanced shading here.)

the other one was Consoles. (simple, lol.)

caught in the crosshairs was Such a Simple Life.

...followed by the loveable Elter Ago. (I love how this turned out.)

Up next was Teenage Wasteland,

close behind was by Eight Squared Titles.

and one of my favorite comics, HotelSoul. (I drew it in my style.)

...so, yeah. Be sure to check out San Fransisco.

Wind yourself Down to Baker Street.
Jan. 24th, 2007 | 06:51 pm
Everybody knows Gerry Rafferty's massive 1970's hit, Baker Street. The classic song about a man and his dreams of owning a house. Sadly, he's a drunk and can never achieve his goal. He lives life, drinking trying to forget about everything he could never have and never realizes he's a rolling stone. It's a great song with a one of the more famous opening riffs (...it's like the 'Sweet Child O' Mine' of easy listening.) Actually, if I remember right. This was played by Lisa in one episode of The Simpsons. (forgot which, it's the one where Homer destroys her saxomaphone.)
I spent half my life trying to find the name to this song. The opening was the only part I knew and I did not know the lyrics, nor the artist. It wasn't until one day when going home that a radio station played the song. (...I managed to remember some of the lyrics, that's what lead me to find out.)
...So, why am I talking about this song? I want to ask you a question, a very simple one. I have three versions of the same song. One, the original by Gerry Rafferty, Two, the cover by The Foo Fighters, and Three, the acoustic version by Gerry Rafferty done live at the New End Zone.
Which, to you, sounds way better?
While the original is good, it is slow. (think about The Atari's "Boys of Summer" versus Don Henley's "Boys of Summer") The live version of the song loses the saxomaphone opening with a guitar that sounds equally good, the song also flows much faster. The Foo Fighter's version? Jebus, the opening riff is horrible. It sounds like just a bunch of out of tune guitars. After that's over, it transforms into something better, Fighter's vocals and general softer faster sound beats out both of the others.
